The American Center for Justice (ACJ) condemns in the strongest terms the targeted political assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. We are equally alarmed by the separate attack on State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who remain hospitalized after surviving multiple gunshot wounds. These acts of coordinated political violence are not only criminal—they are a direct threat to the foundation of our democracy and the right to serve without fear.
According to authorities, the assailant—disguised as a police officer—entered the homes of these elected officials in the early hours of Saturday morning and opened fire. The use of a police-style vehicle and uniform to carry out such an attack underscores a chilling abuse of symbols of state authority to undermine it from within. A manifesto discovered in the suspect’s possession revealed additional names of elected officials, pointing to a broader, premeditated campaign of violence.
We are witnessing the dangerous convergence of political extremism, impersonation of law enforcement, and domestic terrorism. When public officials are hunted for their political identity, the safety of every civic leader—and every community they represent—is at risk.
ACJ Urges Immediate Action:
Enhanced protections for local, state, and federal officials, especially in light of direct targeting.
Transparent investigation and swift prosecution of the perpetrator and any collaborators.
Unified condemnation from leaders across the political spectrum to reject violence in all forms.
National reforms to address the rise of politically motivated attacks and impersonation of public authority.
Political violence has no place in the United States. The ability to serve, speak, and participate in public life—regardless of party or belief—must be sacred and protected. We stand with the victims, their families, and the people of Minnesota, and we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the defense of democracy and human rights.
