The American Center for Justice is deeply concerned by the announcement from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, regarding the criminal charges against 11 students and alumni involved in peaceful protest activities at the University of Michigan. While we respect the rule of law and the importance of public safety, this decision represents a troubling overreach that risks stifling the fundamental rights to free speech and assembly.

The protests, which were centered around vital issues affecting students and the broader community, should not be criminalized. These actions were a legitimate exercise of their First Amendment rights—an essential aspect of any functioning democracy. The charges brought against these individuals send a chilling message to those seeking to express dissent, particularly at a time when students are increasingly mobilizing for justice and social change.

As an organization dedicated to protecting civil liberties, the American Center for Justice calls on the Attorney General to drop all charges and uphold the University of Michigan’s commitment to diversity of thought and freedom of expression. We stand in solidarity with the students and alumni, and we will continue to advocate for the rights of peaceful protesters everywhere.

Justice must serve the people, not suppress their voices.
