Michigan - The American Center for Justice (ACJ) strongly condemns the Israeli airstrikes that targeted the power station, port, and airport in Hodeidah earlier today. These strikes ignited oil tanks at the port and caused extensive damage to the airport, instilling fear and panic among civilians. ACJ emphasizes that these actions constitute a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law and represent a significant escalation against civilian infrastructure, which is protected under international law.
In a series of attacks lasting less than 30 minutes, dozens of Israeli aircraft launched multiple strikes on the power station that supplies electricity to Hodeidah, as well as on the city’s airport and port. The extent of the damage has yet to be fully assessed.
ACJ stresses that Israel's ongoing targeting of civilian infrastructure in Yemen constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law. This body of law explicitly prohibits attacks on civilian objects, particularly under Additional Protocol I of the 1977 Geneva Conventions. Article 52 of this protocol states that "civilian objects shall not be the object of attack." Additionally, Article 53 strictly forbids "any attack against objects indispensable to the survival of the civilian population."
International law mandates the protection of civilian objects, as outlined in the Geneva Conventions. Moreover, Article 25 of the 1907 Hague Convention prohibits "the attack or bombardment, by whatever means, of towns, villages, dwellings, or buildings which are undefended is prohibited."
ACJ warns that targeting critical infrastructure, such as the power station, will deprive civilians—especially students and hospital patients—of essential electricity, further exacerbating the dire conditions already caused by instability in Yemen. Additionally, the attack on Hodeidah's port, a vital economic and humanitarian lifeline for the country, directly violates international law.
Israel's continued attacks on Yemen and other countries in the region only heighten the risk of violent escalation, with unpredictable consequences for global peace and security. This is not an isolated incident; Yemen has been repeatedly targeted during Israeli military operations, including during the recent conflict in Gaza, and now again amid Israeli strikes on Lebanon. These aggressive actions pose a direct threat to regional stability and necessitate an urgent international response.
The American Center for Justice (ACJ) therefore calls on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take immediate action and pressure Israel to cease its targeting of civilian infrastructure in Yemen and throughout the region. We also urge the establishment of an independent international investigation into these attacks, holding those responsible accountable under international law.
