Michigan- The American Center for Justice (ACJ) welcomes the defeat of HR 9495 in the U.S. House of Representatives. This bill would have empowered the Treasury Department to label nonprofit organizations as "terrorist-supporting" without evidence or due process, jeopardizing the work of many human rights groups, including those supporting Palestinian rights.

ACJ stresses that civil society organizations play a vital role in protecting human rights, and political targeting of these organizations undermines constitutional freedoms of expression, assembly, and association. Designating groups without clear evidence sets a dangerous precedent that threatens their financial stability and donor support.

Supporting human rights, including Palestinian rights, is not a crime. ACJ urges legislators to stand against any future attempts to restrict civil society's role and calls on Americans to contact their representatives to uphold justice and democratic values.
